Since their explosion onto the music scene in the early eighties, Iron Maiden has been hailed as one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time. They have released 15 studio albums to date and have sold in excess of 100 million records worldwide. As pioneers of the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal;' a movement that started in the 1970's due to the decline of early metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Iron Maiden have been wowing audiences with groundbreaking music and theatrical performances for over two decades. Their music has influenced and inspired generations of contemporary rock bands, most notably the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica.
The band was formed in East London in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. Their big break came in the early 1980's with the eponymous debut album, Iron Maiden, which reached #4 in the UK albums chart in its first week. After a series of lineup changes, the band went on to release a string of gold and platinum hit albums, such as 1982's The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988), and more recently, A Matter of Life and Death (2006) and Final Frontier (2010).
The band have received many awards and accolades over the years, including the prestigious Ivor Novello Award in 2002 for their international achievements, as well as an induction into the Hollywood RockWalk in Los Angeles in 2005 and a BRIT award in 2009 for 'Best British Live Act.'
As of October 2009, it was estimated that the band had performed over 2000 live shows during their career. Final Frontier was released in August 2010 to a flurry of unanimously positive reviews. The album debuted at #1 in the UK albums chart and at #4 in the US Billboard 200, the highest ranking that the band has reached in the United States.
